A Bookmobile's historical perspective: The Final Chapter

Yes I know, the burning question that has been on the tip of your cerebellum since you were in grade school ...

-- "Mommy & Daddy, where exactly do old bookmobile's go to die?" --

You will be relieved to know, the answer is ... Modesto, California. At least in the case of the US Army San Francisco Presidio Bookmobile #1G-2821 that patrolled the foggy army base in the 60's.

The bookmobile itself is a 1958 model Ford truck that was converted for bookmobile duty by coachbuilder Gerstenslager of Wooster, Ohio on October 9th, 1958 (or so says a tag that is still riveted on the side).

Its days of former glory are now long gone, having been put to pasture many years ago. During a seemingly appropriate mid-life-crisis for a retired bookmobile, it was converted into a mobile home, complete with a kitchen and all the amenities.

Now past its prime, and unable to be resurrected, the aged Presidio Bookmobile will reach its inevitable dénouement.

All hail, the US Army Presidio Bookmobile - you served your country well!
